The Accidental Prime Minister: What is all the fuss about?
Manmohan Singh might have grown indifferent towards all the jokes we made about him being mute during his tenure as Prime Minister of India. But only if this was not enough, Pen India Limited brought forth a movie ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ starred by Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh himself. The movie is said to be based upon the memoir of the same name, by Sanjay Baru- one of leading Indian Policy Analyst.
Similar to the memoir, this movie is certain to make political ramifications, especially, when India- a politically charged nation is moving towards another general election. Although, it is said to be an untold story of Manmohan Singh, a medium to empathise with the man when all he has been is the object of ridicule since he joined office in 2004, but I highly doubt it to serve its purpose.
Amidst the protests, this movie has been passed through CBFC with a No-objection Certificate and is all set to be released on January 11, 2019. Let us wait and see that whether the movie will serve its purpose or will we get few more ideas to ridicule the man.
If you pay attention to the life of Manmohan Singh, every little detail will tell you that he was anything but political. So how come a man, who had rejected the offer by then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru to join his political party, for a teaching job, end up as Prime Minister himself. Well Accidentally, we presume.
The Legacy of Manmohan Singh
Say what you want about him, Manmohan Singh has been one hell of an academic. There is an anecdote that passes around in the political community. The story goes something like this:
When Manmohan Singh was teaching in a college in Amritsar, his neighbour- Mulk Raj Anand, who was a renowned English novelist invited him to his home to meet then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. During the meeting, Jawahar Lal Nehru informally asked Dr Manmohan if he was interested to get on the political wave by joining his party. Manmohan Singh respectfully rejected the offer saying that he was happy teaching to college students.
This would have been a great opportunity for Dr Manmohan Singh to enter politics as he was invited to join by the Supreme leader of the ruling party. However, he stuck to his choice resiliently. Little did he know, that him NOT joining politics was inevitable and he was destined to be the second man after Jawahar Lal Nehru to serve longest period as PM of India.
