Where are your standards now, Ryan Intl. ?
Ryan International School- The term international is used here to reflect global collaborations, certifications and other what-nots the school might have with other International schools scattered all over the globe. On the one hand where the school aims to match the global level education and study culture to ensure the secure future of its student, incidents like these put everything gruesomely right back to the ground.
On Saturday, when the whole country was busy taking sides in the ongoing lynching and extreme religionism debate, news about the death of 6-year old boy in Ryan International School, Gurugram came as a sockdolager. Later, as the case progressed, one of the bus conductors, Ashok Kumar was charged of murder after he confessed to the crime. In his statement, he told that upon not being able to sexually advance and in fear of being told upon by the boy, he killed the 6-year old by slitting his throat with a knife, which he just happened to bring along in the bathroom.
This could be one of those open and shut cases where the culprit confesses to the crime and is charged as per the law. However, the big question still unanswered. Are our kids safe with such schools who boast about their international study curriculum while accommodating large number of students, probably much more than what they can handle with their available resources.
This is not just one case where a kid has been brutally murdered within school campus. Earlier, Class 1 student of Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj was found dead in one of the school tanks.
Focusing on the incident in hand, one could easily question the presence of bus conductor in kids’ washroom or why somebody would carry a knife inside the school premises. More importantly, why were the school authorities (or at least school guards) were not informed about the bus conductor’s presence and that he was carrying a weapon (Yes, knife in school is considered a weapon).
When I was in high school, my parents paid around INR 300-500 as quarterly tuition fees to the convent school, which was one of the expensive schools of our town. Upon doing a little research today, I found Ryan International School charges around 25,000 as just the tuition fees for a quarter in addition to other stupid charges. I possibly cannot fathom where do they spend all this money if they cannot provide a separate toilet for its workers. Where does the money go? Advertisements? Branding? Promotion? Because, clearly it does not go to the welfare and security of students.
I wish, the government would do something about this problem instead of just in addition to the death sentence and suspending few from the Ryan International School authorities like it has been doing in previous cases. I wish, there would be some norm about the security of students in school considering the possibilities of the such incidents. Because if a kid going to his school is not safe in my country- I don’t know who is?
