A Forgotten Dream by Mihir Chauhan
The idea of the poem came to Mihir inspired by a dream he once had.
In the dream, he was with one of his friends, at his chidhood home, in a neighborhood which saw frequent riots. Vulnerable and exposed to the immediate threat that lay ahead of them, they hid and ran and fought together to save their lives. In the intervening period, they indulged themselves in a conversation that ranged from their society to their existence.
However, disturbed by the intense dream, he woke up dehydrated, clammy and thirsty. He couldn’t recall the conversation, but he was sure that it was something, which they wouldn’t usually do while awake, in person.
He eventually realized the restrictions that reality imposes on conversations and personal connections as
opposed to the infinite and surreal possibilities of dreams you have every night. He doesn’t want to go
into the abstracts of the poem because “those are better left to the imagination“, he says.
